Granny's Old Time Cranberry Relish Recipe

Okay, I am back as promised and I bring you the "ABSOLUTE" best Cranberry Relish recipe you will ever put in your mouth.

This is a great “cran-relish” for all turkey dishes and turkey sandwiches. It is an alternative to the more commonly used cranberry sauce. My Granny’s relish consists of raw cranberries, apples, pineapple and an orange, all put through a food processor with sugar added to soften it all up. The resulting relish is truly delicious.

A few years ago I made this relish at my Cousin Bug’s house for Christmas dinner. He told me a story that he had received some Cran Relish as a gift from a friend who is a cook in Miami, Florida a few years before I cooked up mine. And he told me my Granny's recipe was 100 times better than what he got as a gift from the professional cook.

So, I am now sharing the recipe with you in hopes you will add it to your menu come time for the Holidays. Also, I pray that you will enjoy it as much as my family has through the years.

Granny's Old Time Cranberry Relish Recipe

The Store Bought Stuff: (Ingredients)

1- Large Florida whole seedless navel orange, cut into sections.
1 to 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar (add more to make it sweeter, it’s all up to you.)
2- Cups washed raw cranberries.
2- Skinned and cored tart tasting apples.
1- Cup fresh or canned pineapple.

Slinging It Together: (Preparation)

- Set up the old handy dandy food processor on your table with a large bowl to catch the mix as it processes (be very careful not to over process, or you'll end up with mush not relish.) If you have an old-fashioned grinder, you can use that but they do leak a little so prepare for that, or you can use a grinder attachment on a Kitchen Aid mixer. You could chop by hand (loads of work.)

- Run all fruit (Cranberries, Apples, Pineapple and Orange) through the processor, use the entire orange, peels, and all.

- Throw in the sugar, let sit at room temperature until sugar dissolves, about 45-60 minutes.

- Store in the refrigerator for 24 hours (The more it sits, the better it tastes.)

- Makes about 3-4 cups.

Hope you enjoy! And Happy Holidays to you and yours.
